12 tips for someone travelling to the United States for the first time

The United States of America is a very friendly place so you do not have to be worried about feeling lonely or feeling like an outsider. But, since, you are not a native and are travelling there for the first time, there are a few things which you should definitely keep in mind.

Here are a few tips if you are travelling to the USA for the first time:

  1. First and the foremost rule, always keep your passport and your ID with you.Never ever leave it in the hotel room.
  2. Get along with people. You never know when you might need help. And also, you will get to know about the place and places of interest.
  3. Check for the weather conditions online for the place you are going to stay and pack accordingly, since there are rules for maximum luggage weight and luggage rules for different flights, which you might also want to check.
  4. Understand the local transport system. Check the local bus ant train routes. These mode of transports are cheaper than renting cars or taxis. But, if you are travelling for a longer period of time (more than a month or 2), rent a car. It is feasible and comfortable. But, again, you NEED to have an international driving permit with you.
  5. Keep your important documents like passport, tickets, insurancesand destination address safe throughout the journey
  6. Drink lots of water and get lots of sleep in the flight itself to tackle jet lag.
  7. Fill the customs form that you will get on arrival at your destination, either in the airplane or airport, carefully with all the right information from your passport, ticket and visa. It will also ask you about the value of articles that you are carrying/ amount of cash that you need to declare. If you don’t get this form on the flight then you will get it at the airport.
  8. Tip the staff as it is expected from you to do so.
  9. Always be polite. Use good words since cursing is frowned upon. Hold the door for the person behind you. Always greet the people back who greet you first or take the initiative of greeting them first.
  10. If you are driving, strictly follow the rules of the lanes and the speed limits. They are serious about road rules and safety and do not joke about it.
  11. Be punctual at each and every occasion, whether formal or informal.
  12. Relax. Just be yourself. No need to be cynical and shy or extra extrovert. Also, don’t try to be like them to fit in. You are uniquely you. Be you.

Happy Travelling !!!… 🙂
