INTERVIEW: Influencer, Fashion Designer & Actor, Kevon Dooley Talks Canvasourworld, Advocacy, Foster Care System, Nigerian Food, Social Media, ATL, and More…

Meet 22 years old influencer, actor and fashion designer, Kevon Dooley. Originally from Florida but moved to Atlanta March of last year to pursue his dreams.

Kevon is currently working on networking in the city and as a long story to tell. He came from being in foster care having no mother or father to support me and always on his own fighting depression and still managed to keep himself together.

He hopes his story can show others that no matter what if you keep your head high and keep working hard you can succeed the future is yours.

Hey Kevon! Would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey here’s a little bit about me. Recently I moved to Atlanta from Florida to pursue my dreams in acting and fashion designing. I do custom made pieces so everything is one of a kind. What made me want to be a designer is a way to express my feelings I paint sow and cut everything so it’s original. My clothing line name is Canvasourworld by Kevon Dooley.

Talk me through an average day in the life of you?

I just work on my designing skills and new ways to market myself better. Also I attend acting classes to better my skills and do some modeling on the side.

What institution(s) did you attend and what did you study?

I just graduated from high school, so everything I learned was from me studying and practicing my craft on my own.

How were you discovered and what inspired you to go into acting?

When I transferred high schools I was in driving Ed. When I went to another school they didn’t have anymore room in drivers Ed so they put me in Greek, so I began to fall in love with doing plays and expressing myself to others it was always fun! Acting was always one of my dream jobs I wanted. I was discovered from my Instagram.

Tell us more about your new clothing line “Canvasyourworld”?

My clothing line Canvasourworld is basically me expressing that you can create your own and be yourself be different. Also everything is customized and handcrafted by me. My slogan is Canvasourworld “create your own universe!!”

What was your first audition and what was the experience like?

My first audition was me being on “Hylton” casting. My experience went great and I got casted to be an extra. Being on set was so amazing, felt like it was meant for me!

What other shows/movies have you started in ?

I’m studying scripts to be in a short film, will keep everyone updated 🙏🏽

What will you say are some of the differences of being on either the big or small screens?

I think the difference is that the big screen will get you more exposure the small screen is just a starter but both is an accomplishment.

Speaking of differences, what type of TV shows do you find yourself watching?

The TV shows I find myself watching are Empire, Game of Thrones, Power and I also like cartoon shows.

Tell me more about your love for acting/fashion and how you use it to communicate through your work?

The way I use my fashion to communicate is when I’m designing I express myself through how I feel. If I’m feeling vintage I will create something vintage, if I’m feel good I will create something more light color. When expressing your feelings through acting I write my own scrips and also just practice and act them out.

What will you say motivated/inspires you to stay dedicated to what you do?

What motivated me is that I came from being poor, being homeless moving from foster home to foster home. I wanted to change my life and the outcome of everything I have been through. If I stay dedicated then I will always be on top of my game and be successful.

What’s your Dos and Don’t when it comes to acting?

Dos and don’ts when it come to acting;

  1. Don’t be nervous
  2. Be Yourself
  3. Be hyped
  4. Be different
  5. Always practice
  6. Keep working on perfecting your craft
  7. Don’t overthink when doing your scripts
  8. Have fun on the job or when working
  9. Act accordingly to scrips
  10. Be kind to others on set
  11. Come to set prepared
  12. Make sure you have script down packed!

What do you do to stay in shape, do you go to the gym?

I eat healthy to stay in shape. I prep healthy meals, also I attend the gym called Planet Fitness.

How do you balance your personal and professional life?

I balance my personal life and professional life by setting my schedule to focus on my business and designing and acting. Putting time in your professional life is really important for your future it’s always good to work hard.

How would you describe the entertainment scene in the United States, when it comes to encouraging new talents?

The entertainment business in United States is wonderful. They always encourage the young new actors and fresh start actors to keep striving and keep working hard also they scout so many new actors young and talented

Most of your life you grew up in foster care, living from foster home to foster home and dealing with depression. But that didn’t stop you from wanting to be successful! Do you believe that no matter the situation you can always change your life?

Most of my life I was in foster care. Yes I believe no matter the situation you can change your life and you can be successful no matter what!  It’s not about where you came from or how you grew up, it’s not about how you start off but it’s how you finish and what you did to better and change the situation you were in.

I heard you have been to Washington, DC to visit Congress to advocate for foster kids to get some of the bills passed. Is that true and if so what bills?

Yes I did I advocate for foster care and I’ve been to Washington DC to get the extended Foster Care bill to be passed so that when kids turn 18 years old they’re not kicked out of the system forced to become homeless on the streets with nowhere to go. They actually passed the bill and now there is extended foster care! I talked with Congresswoman Karen Bass. What is your take on the latest sexual allegations rocking Hollywood?

I disagree with if it’s true, but I also try to mind my business because I know people will always voice their opinion on something they know totally nothing about.

What do you consider the most common stereotype about the fashion industry?

If you black or white you have to dress a certain kind of way or you wear something specific people will judged you.

What aspect surprised you the most once you started as an actor?

That being on a big screen accomplishing my goals and working my dream job is the best thing ever.

Looking back to when you started acting and modelling, is there anything you would like to change about the industry?

Actually the industry is doing great. They are casting more African American people and also they are getting main roles in movies.

Which brands, clients, photographers, models, actors, producers, directors, etc, have you worked with?

I have worked with Levi, Clifton Powell (Photographer), De.pers (Atlanta studio photography).

What do you consider your biggest professional success so far?

My biggest success so far is me being able to get over 100 thousand followers on Instagram and have people look up to me.

Who do you want to work with that you haven’t yet?

Some people I would like to work with in the industry is Denzel Washington and Dwayne (the rock) Johnson and many more.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is staying happy and loving myself and staying consistent! 

Tell us two things people don’t know about you?

2 things people don’t know about me is that is that;

  1. I’m very diverse
  2. I used to be homeless but now I’m on my rise to success.

You are very active on social media. Do you think its important to be online and if so why?

I think it’s very important to be online to network and market yourself, your brand or promote what your doing so more people will be able to see your work. Social media plays a big part because of advertising and marketing.

You are originally from Florida, but moved to Atlanta in March of last year, How is that working out for you?

Moving to Atlanta has been amazing, it’s a great big city full of opportunity for Africa American people. The acting industry is growing here along with business you can literally be successful here if you work hard at it.

What are your must visit travel destinations?

I’ve been to Washington, DC plenty of times to advocate for foster care on business trips.

Name 5 things we should take seriously about our style choices?

I would just say;

  1. Be free
  2. Be Comfortable with whatever you wear
  3. Be different
  4. Wear things that express your feelings
  5. Be very stylish.

How would you describe your style?

My style choice is different, its unique, its a little vintage. Everything I wear is designed by me! And i set trends when i wear my designs, sometimes I dress beachy but I’m diverse so I can wear anything and make it look good.

What style genre appeals to you the most?

The vintage and casual style appeals to me the most.

Name your 5 must have accessories/essentials?

I like wearing my chain earrings and watch when I go out.

I eat Nigerian food my favorite dish is jollof rice but I also like;

  • Porridge Beans

What songs are currently on your playlist?

I just listen to Chris Brown Kodack Black, Trey Songz mostly r&b

Apart from acting, fashion, etc, what other projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on enrollment in college to study biography and I’m planning on traveling to Thailand and to start a travel YouTube channel!

Seeing you’re doing your dreams, what advice can you give others to pursue their dreams?

The advise I give others is to keep focusing on your dreams, keep achieving success don’t ever give up work on your craft and prefect your craft. Practice and learn more there’s not to much learning always room for improvement.

Any specific plans for the future? 

My plans for the future is to become really successful to where I can financially give back to the youth and give back to the foster care system. I wanna open a few stores across the United States for my clothing line. Also I’m gonna start traveling more. This year I wanna be a main actor in a movie too.

Any final words?

My final words is keep working hard. Network, chase your dreams to the fullest and keep faith in God and don’t let anyone tear you down if you fail keep working there’s always room for improvement stay active on your goal and succeed. Make your family proud. Give back to the community be different and be a leader.
