INTERVIEW: Content Creator, Photographer & Model, Darius Quick Talks About His first project “The Color Red”, Quitting His 9-5 Job to Start His Own Production Company, Plans to Shoot a Documentary in Africa, and More…

Meet Darius Quick, a Baltimore native, and born July 28, 1992. He moved to Texas and while there his love for cinema and writing was reborn and Darius started focusing solely on “creating art”.

He quit my job in December 2019 to pursue my multimedia company. Darius is working on his first project, “The Color Red“, an interactive e-pub that will be available on Kindle/iOS devices and due for release on the 28th of July, 2020. It’s a digital book featuring poetry, short stories, and other original content all written/produced by him. Each page will be a “video diary” that includes footage shot by him and things he as written.

Check out my interview with Darius below:

Hey Darius! Would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello! My name is Darius Quick. I’m from Baltimore, MD. I love all things art related, especially cinema and photography.

Talk me through an average day in the life of you?

I usually wake up really early to meditate and set affirmations. Then I like to make breakfast and get a workout in. Whatever I’m going through in life I use as inspiration for work. I usually dedicate the daytime to my projects and nighttime with my family.

What institution(s) did you attend and what did you study?

I studied at the York college of Pennsylvania and University of Maryland Baltimore County, never graduated. I’m about 12 credits shy of my BA in Biology.

How did you end up also falling in love with videography / photography and why?

Since I was a kid I’ve been obsessed with videogrpahy/photography. I got my first camera in the 7th Grade and since then I’ve always been obsessed with capturing and editing shots.

What was your first job process like?

My first job was at CVS. I was 14 and I wanted extra pocket money for food and things for school.

Tell me more about your first project, “The Color Red” now on pre-order and due out July 28th. What’s it all about?

The Color Red is a project I’m so excited about. It’s a digital book that features video pages, poetry, short stories, commentary, and so much more. It’s really like my autobiography but told through different forms of art. I didn’t want to limit myself to just words. I’m releasing it on my 28th birthday. I feel like everything is happening on Gods time.

What will you say made you decide to do the project?

I quit my job last year to focus on myself and my happiness. Corporate  America wasn’t working for me. I was depressed and this project is me reintroducing myself to the world.

What camera/gears do you always use in the production of your videos and photos?

I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark IV and I edit a lot with Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, & Photoshop

What editing software do you use and How long does it take you to edit your videos and photos?

Depending on how inspired I am, I can finish things really fast. If I want something to be really special I take my time. The funny thing is “The Color Red” has been 27 years in the making but I won’t finish it until the last minute I”m sure.

Do you think we are taking our health and wellbeing seriously?

I think that we are taking our physical health and bodies seriously but not our mental health enough.

You quit your job last year December, to pursue your own multimedia company, why so, what the name of the company, and how is that working out for you so far?

My company is Reds Media Productions. I want to produce, direct and create art without being put in a box. I made my own production company so I could set my own rules. I don’t mind collaborating but I don’t like being told WHAT to do. It’s just my prerogative. This gives me the ability to create on my own terms. I’m all about control.

How do you balance your personal and professional life?

I don’t really have a personal life haha. I spend a lot of time with my family and I have a best friend named LaSean but I am totally dedicated to my work right now.

What do you consider the most common stereotype about being in creative art?

The biggest stereotype is that hmmm… I need to think on that one. It’s a few lol

What aspect surprised you the most once you started the new company?

I think I was surprised how much I enjoy running my own company. I designed my website (with square-space) and everything from marketing and how I want my brand to look. I really enjoy cultivating my own image. Everything from creating content to actually engineering and producing the final product. I love it.

Which brands, clients, photographers, YouTubers, models, directors, etc, have you worked with?

I want to work with BEYONCE. I want to work with Hype Williams, Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, Jordan Peele, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Brandy. I can name so many people and brands that have inspired me. I really want to do so much!

What do you consider your biggest professional success so far?

I’ve had the pleasure of providing content for Mynd Spa, Todd Quick (an upcoming model/actor signed to Lilcolm Agency and my little brother), the Relentless Group, and several local models and influencers.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge has been believing in myself.

As someone active on social media. Do you think its important to be online and if so why?

I think it’s important to be active on social media so you can know what’s going on in the world but I think it’s just as important to be unplug and take breaks.

You were born in Baltimore, MD, but now based in Texas. How is that working out for you?

I love it. Baltimore made me the man I am today. Fearless and strong. Texas has softened me up and taught me a lot of other life lessons. I’ve been able to find myself here. I don’t plan on staying, I do want to relocate to either LA or Atlanta.

What will you say are your must-visit travel destinations?

I’m pretty basic. I love a nice beach view,  but I really want to visit Africa and shoot a documentary or special there. The world needs to see how beautiful it is.

What style genre appeals to you the most?

I love fashion but lately I’m out of the loop. I love athletic leisure brands like Adiddas and Ivy Park. I love being comfortable because I’m always on the go. However when I want to get cute for like a date or something I love formal attire (labels don’t really matter as long as it looks GOOD)

What is your favourite dish?

I love wings, burgers, and fries.

Any specific plans for the future?

I want to eventually direct movies, music videos, and even learn how to produce beats and get into music.

Any final words?

SPREAD LOVE! Forgive yourself!
