4 Reasons Why You Should Have Power Book II: Ghost On Your Watchlist

Just when we thought the action was over in the Big Rich Town, along comes Power Book II: Ghost, a spin-off of Power, a show which tells the story of James “Ghost” St Patrick, a New York drug dealer who fronts as a nightclub owner.

Currently streaming on Showmax, Power Book II: Ghost kicks off a few days after the death of Ghost in the Power finale, promising all the drama and intrigue fans have come to associate with the show. The show follows Tariq St Patrick (Michael Rainey Jnr) navigating his new life, in which his desire to shed his father’s legacy comes up against the mounting pressure to save his family.

Here are 4 reasons why Power Book II: Ghost should be on your Showmax watchlist.

1. Micheal Rainey Jnr as Tariq St Patrick

In Ghost, Michael Rainey Jnr resumes his role as Tariq St Patrick, the character fans loved to hate in Power. As Insider describes his performance on the show, “He’s older and now carries the sort of confidence you can’t fake for the camera. The show quite plainly rests on the consistency of his performances and thankfully for the show’s writers, he continues to hit all the right notes.”

Following the death of his father, Ghost (Omari Hardick), in the Power finale, Tariq quickly steps into his new role as the man of the house. From the onset, it is clear that Tariq is a chip off the old block. He maneuvers his way around college and the criminal underworld while managing to land a hot-shot lawyer for his mother (Naturi Naughton), with a similar quick-witted charm we saw from Ghost through the six seasons of Power. All in all, Rainey Jnr shines through his role as a young villain.

2. Familiar faces, more drama

If there is anything fans have come to expect from Power, it is non-stop drama and Power Book II: Ghost delivers on this.

With Tasha locked up for the murder of her husband and Tariq doing everything he can to get his mother out while settling into life as a college student, we’re introduced to new plots and villains. Through it all, series creator Courtney Kemp maintains the dramatic tempo from Power with several characters from the original show reprising their roles, including Cooper Saxe (Shane Johnson), who’s now the prosecuting lawyer on Tasha’s case, and Ghost’s business partner, Simon Stern (Victor Garber).

3. Exciting cameos

If there’s anything more exciting than rapper Method Man playing a hot-shot lawyer, it’s hip-hop soul queen Mary J. Blige playing a criminal matriarch. While 50 Cent’s character Kanan might have been killed off in Power season 6, he continues to serve as an executive producer on the show.

4. It’s the perfect weekend binge-watch

With 10 episodes at a running time of 51-64 minutes currently available for binging on Showmax, there’s enough content to last a whole weekend.
