Talking #AMVCAs with IK Osakioduwa

Celebrating the continents film and TV talent, the AfricaMagic Viewer’s Choice Awards come to you live from Lagos, Nigeria on the 9th of March.

You can still make your mark on the awards by casting a vote in the Viewers’ Choice categories. Hustle though, voting closes on Sunday 3 March at midnight!

Recently revealed as one of the hosts, charismatic Big Brother Africa presenter IK Osakioduwa is set to up the glamour quotient at the high profile event, alongside the stunning Vimbai Mutinhiri.

Described as cool and calm with effortless charm, IK said he was thrilled at the opportunity to host what could become the continent’s premiere awards show.

We caught up with the enigmatic star and spoke to him about the big night.

How do you feel about your role at the AMVCAs?
I’m really REALLY excited. It’s a really big deal when you think about it. It’s the first time AfricaMagic is doing anything like this. This is going to grow really huge over the year. So to be selected to be a part of the very first one is just amazing. I feel pretty special right now.

What are you expecting to see and hear on the night?
First of all, like with all awards, it starts from the Red Carpet. I expect that all the African (not just Nigerian) movie industry players will turn out in huge numbers, dressed to kill. I think designers are going to go all out clothing their favourite actors, directors, producers etc.

I also look forward to hearing who’ll have the most interesting speech, who’ll attempt to talk forever when receiving an award (before we are forced to shoo them back to their seats), who’ll receive the award for best Actor …. All of it.

If you were a nominee at the event and you won, who would you thank in your speech?
Hmm…. Why don’t we just give it a shot instead. “And the winner is…… Ik Osakioduwa” – SFX: Applause Applause Applause – IK: “Thank you Thank you. Thank you.

Wow this is amazing isn’t it. First of all, I’d like to thank God, the giver of all talent. I couldn’t have pulled any of it off without Him. Also I’d like to thank the cast and crew of this amazing movie. I particularly want to thank the writer, the producers and directors. We would still be out there looking for work without you guys.

“I can’t go any further without thanking my wife and kids for being gracious enough to let me spend so many nights away from home, and also for letting me kiss so many pretty women in the line of duty (it was part of the script).

“Last of all, and most importantly, I’d like to thank the viewers for choosing me to receive this. I look forward to working hard to please you over and over again with more great movies. Also congrats to everyone else nominated in this category. It’s the first AMVCAs, so that’s quite a feat. This is for all of us (lifting the award high and looking sober). Thank you everyone”.

Now that wasn’t so hard, was it? Let’s see how the award recipients do…

What do you love about African film and television?
I love that African films stay true to African people and traditions. American scripts wouldn’t sit well with us as a people. They would never be able to really do our heritage justice. Also you can’t help but notice the way that African humour is properly translated into television programmes. Our actors, producers, directors and industry players are brilliant. And while it is true that there is great room for improvement, it’s about time that we as viewers stopped to appreciate the huge strides the African movie industry has already taken.

What do you think about the nominees and their contribution to the wider continental film and television industry?

I’m really excited about the nominees because they are not all the names of the veterans in the industry. There are quite a few names that are not as widely known as others. A closer look at these relatively “new” players will reveal the maturity and finesse of their craft. That’s why it’s important to appreciate what they do. Of course I’m also excited about the nominated veterans who never fail to deliver great quality in their movies. We could never celebrate them enough.

What do audiences not know about what goes on behind the scenes on films, TV shows, etc?
Well people may assume they know, but you find that they rarely REALLY know just how many people play a role in making a movie a success. From the person sorting out logistics, who could easily loose a crucial location if planning is poor, to the make-up artist who could essentially distract the attention of the viewer from the unfolding of a brilliant script, by showcasing terrible make up.

One major slip from a continuity officer, will have a cinema hall of viewers screaming is utter disrespect for the movie. There are many people behind the scenes who are in their own rights responsible for the success or failure of the movie. That’s why we as viewers must stop to give a round of applause to those teams that actually do get it right and even go further to excel.
