Asuquo Eton recently interviewed Jason and tells us more about him, his brand, style and more…
Tell us a little more about the man, Jason Boateng?
My name is Jason Boateng, born a raised in United Kingdom, London. I am organically from Ghana in West Africa. I’m 26, a BA university graduate in Marketing and Accounting from Middlesex University.
I am a fashion stylist and personal shopper and not a designer. I have recently debut my first collection “Resort 2015”.
Which celebrities have you worked with?
I have worked with a number of cool person. Will.i.am, Neyo, Kay B, Lola Rae, Yvonne Nelson to name a few.
Who are the 3 people that you are dying to see in your pieces?
I would say; our modern day style icons like Rihanna, Michelle Obama or Beyoncé would “make my life!”
When did you decide to go into fashion?
I would say yes. For as long as I can remember; way back to when I was a little toddler, I was having dreams of dresses, fabrics and design ideas for garments! Having a huge appreciate for styling and the fashion industry, I knew I wanted to be involved in the fashion world in one way or another.
Recently you launched your Resort 2015 collection, what inspired it?
This collection is my heart, my first born, my God given talent; it shows off my skills, technics and my extensive experience in the industry. It’s my debut collection and its inspired by red carpet looks throughout the ages.
The resort ‘15-collection emphasises and pays homage to beauty and the power of sex yet simplicity. It is a reflection of the way these qualities can often seem abstract. This collection of dresses and dinner jackets feature black, white, champagne, rich gold, shades of blue, subtle flower prints in sheer lace, elegantly placed on softly textured fabric. The pieces are fundamentally feminine and are guaranteed to give a woman the power and sensuality that comes with being glamorously dressed.
Can you tell our readers what your brand is all about?
The Jason Boateng brand is luxurious, high-end and fashion forward womenswear. I design for the confident woman that is comfortable in a body, appreciates, a lady that has personality and more importantly style.
Would you say staying abroad has affect your style in anyway?
I would say yes. I’m a total perfectionist and I believe it’s due to the surroundings. The fashion industry in Europe is no joke and very unforgiven. As a new designer I have one chance to get it right in order to be given a chance. This is why it’s taking me this long to do a collection I’m proud of and launch it to the world.
Do you still act?
Every Magazine and New paper i have ever been in are features on me and my career. Acting is a big passion and love of mine, yes I still act and hopefully always will. I just need the right roles and scripts and “I’m down”.
How would you describe your style?
All over the place, LOL. I love fashion so much, people sometimes don’t get my style and think I’m crazy for wearing certain things.
My style is clean cut, young, uncomfortable and fashion forward. Basically think; Kanye daughter had a kid with Pharrell’s son, yes; that would be me.
What does your personal life on a daily basis entail?
I’m a easy going guy I think; wake up around 8am; have breakfast, run to the gym for an hour, come house eat again whiles getting ready for the studio. I’m in the studio working by 11am till about 7pm, drive back home, pick up dinner on the way back. I get my outfit ready for the next day, watch tv or a film, shower and I’m in bed by 10pm. That’s pretty much about it. Im very boring; I know “lol”.
Name your 5 must have accessories/essentials?
Hand cream, big watches, my iPhone, bank card and a bottle of water
What are your favorite fashion trends?
At the moment it’s oversize hats and coats. Also colour blocking.
Do you still visit Ghana?
Yes, every December I’m in Ghana for Christmas without question and I love it. I have been doing this for the past 4years. I have loads of family and friends there, so it’s always a good time.
What is your favorite Ghanaian dish?
Chale!!! Where do l start lol, I really love all African food but I would have to say my favourite is Banku and Okra soup not stew; the soup. I love it.
Do you listen to Ghanaian music, if yes which songs are currently on your playlist?
Ghana music is cool. I have pretty much all the songs by my friends Efya, my personal favourite song is “Little things”. I also have Sarkodie’s tracks and some old school Kojo Antwi.
Apart from fashion, styling and acting, what other projects are you currently working on?
I have a TV fashion segment on a TV channel in London called London Live, it’s a very big breakfast show.
Seeing you’re doing your dreams at a young age what advice can you give others to pursue their dreams?
Remember not everyone skills and talent are the same. It’s important to find your God given gift, perfect your skill or craft and do what your love as your career.
Basically, just never stop trying. Just because God doesn’t do something when you want him to do it doesn’t mean he will not do it, delayed doesn’t mean denied.
Where do you see yourself in 2-5 years from now?
I have huge dreams for the Jason Boateng brand. I want the brand to be a power fashion house; designing and selling everything from children wear to home furniture.
Thank you for your time
Your welcome!
