AUDIO: Wani – Blem (Refix)
So, while Drake’s hodgepodge of musical styles may have given birth to a relatively solid body of work, something about it still rings slightly false – and listening to Wani’s refix of Drake’s “Blem”, the 7th track off More Life, it starts to become clear why.
About a minute into the refix, Wani introduces a sample of 2Face Idibia’s 13-year-old Afropop banger, “Keep On Rocking”– a choice that suddenly gives the track a wholly authentic feel.
It no longer feels like an artiste appropriating a sound that doesn’t belong to him, it instead starts to play like a welcome melding of genres.
Don’t get us wrong, anyone is allowed to sing dancehall, but Drake’s choice of words – like “wasteman” for example – kinda makes him sound like the musical equivalent of “pick me!”
Enjoy!
