VIDEO: Black Panther wins top prize at SAG awards 2019
Black Panther has won the top film award in at the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, putting it in strong contention for an Oscars win this February.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” dominated the TV comedy categories and “This Is Us” took the TV drama ensemble award Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
An exultant Chadwick Boseman accepted the award for “Black Panther,” which topped “A Star Is Born,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” Boseman admitted that he had not prepared a speech and quipped, “To be young, gifted and black.”
Boseman explained backstage that he used the Nina Simone song title to underline the challenges that black actors face in a world where they are often relegated to being the sidekick and the supporting player. “We knew that we had something special, that we could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see,” Boseman said.
Prior to the televised portion of the show, “Black Panther” and “GLOW” won the awards for stunt ensembles.
