AUDIO MIXTAPE: L Tip x DJ Malefactor – Tip Flip Tuesdays (Vol. 1)
L-Tip has been building anticipation to his upcoming EP titled PHLY CHI, which saw the first single (Perfect Timing) enjoying runs on local hip hop charts of 5FM and Ukhozi FM. He then followed up with the well received Soy Sauce single. Not to mention, Tip has also been churning out freestyles on a weekly basis which his fans have come to affectionately know as #TipFlipTuesday.
Last week L-Tip announced the impromptu release of the Tip Flip Tuesday Vol.1 Tape in conjunction with the launch of his official website http://ltipworld.com/. The tape is hosted by internationally renowned, DJ Malefactor, who is notorious for his Grind Mode Cypher affiliation. It must be said that this project is one incredibly nostalgic piece of art.
Tip Flip Tuesday Vol.1 is a collection of all the Tip Flip freestyles that have been delivered, including a few new unreleased entries to the list. Tip kicks off the project with JOVID 19 (Tip Flip), where he likens the emotion of jealousy to a virus. On this joint we get a rare peak into his inner most thoughts at the time. The beat provides a dreamy landscape which sets the tone for a moving offering. We then immediately get into serious business with Life (Tip Flip), where we hear Tip dropping game about how paying your dues separates you from the average man. Tip exhibits a very “real talk” style of writing, and this is evident again on Luxury In Vision (Tip Flip), which explores the ‘catch 22’ nature of the pursuit of wealth.
One listener described the mix tape as an audible workout, “Slow at 1st,. A warm up, increased to intensity midway, then a cool down that had me STILL energised and yearning for more…”.This pays homage to DJ Malefactor’s track selection. The nostalgic element of the project hits its peak when we reach TKZee Halloween (Tip Flip), which strongly feels like the late 90s. From that point on wards, Tip treats us to his immaculate skill over beats from modern hits such as Wow, The Box and No Guidance.
L-Tip is in his element throughout the offering, so much so that one would feel that there would be no difference had the beats been muted. The perfect way to stay busy as we eagerly await the PHLY CHI EP.
Enjoy!
