Here’s why there’s no better time to watch #BBNaija

Let’s face it: 2020 has been rough. COVID-19 threw us a curveball that no one saw coming. The global news-cycle is dominated by the unfortunate nature of the virus, and many of us are overwhelmed and exhausted at what has become a new normal. That said, wouldn’t it be nice to take a break from this new “reality” and escape into another “reality”? One that entertains us, educates us and keeps us positively occupied as the world slowly returns to a sense of normalcy? Well look no further: BBNaija is here; and for the next three months you will enjoy second to none entertainment as we watch strangers slug it out for a grand prize worth N85m.

The timeliness of the show is extremely critical – as the world comes to grips with COVID-19 pandemic many cities across the world have mandated lockdowns or curfews. In Nigeria and indeed across Africa, the story isn’t any different. This is where BBNaija comes in. The show is wildly popular with audiences across the continent, and with more people reaching for their various screens for entertainment and news, there’s no better time for Africa’s biggest show.

The fifth edition of BBNaija premieres on Sunday the 19th of July; viewers will get front row seats to a first look at the new set of housemates. These strangers, meeting for the first time, will surely bring on different traits, nuances and personalities that some of us might find extremely entertaining and might go as far as comparing them to other ex-housemates from previous seasons. Who is going to be the feisty one? charismatic one? King or queen of dance? goody-two-shoes? Heartthrob? Well, make sure you tune in to find out.

We all know Biggie has a passion for competitions and he never fails to give the housemates tasks to battle it out. The games in the house also go a long way to determine who qualifies for the ‘Head of House’ or ‘veto power’ positions.  Once again, viewers across the continent will pitch their tent with the housemates who tickle their fancy.

Then there are the famous Saturday parties, guaranteed to get – and keep you – dancing. These parties also serve as extra talking points for fans, viewers and ardent reviewers of the show as the housemates often get to reveal hitherto unknown sides of themselves. This is also where we get to know the real “Slay Kings and Queens” in the house as everyone picks this day to show us their weekend best.

The trademark suspense that comes with the nominations – and amplified by Host Ebuka’s shenanigans – adds an extra layer to the intrigue; viewers never know until the very last-minute which housemate will be evicted. The topsy turvy drama is not for the faint hearted, even though it ensures BBNaija stays heads and shoulders above any other show even it comes to a dose of suspense and intrigue.

Overall, we must admit that we are all excited about BBNaija’s return. For one, it’s good cheer – there will be fun and exciting things to speak about, breaking away from the relentless COVID-19 news wave. Secondly, as many of us work from home and get accustomed to a reality of life spent indoors, BBNaija shows us another “reality”; one we can all enjoy, celebrate, learn from and be entertained. Are you not entertained?

Big Brother Naija show will return to our screens on Sunday, July 19th on DStv channel 198 and GOtv channel 29.
