‘Birdman’ wins Best Cast, Movies, at 2015 SAG Awards; see full winners list
The Oscars are still weeks away, but awards season continues with the SAG Awards, where the acting community gathers to hand out prizes to their own.
The SAG Awards honor the best acting of the year in film and television.
On the heels of winning at Saturday night’s Producers Guild Awards, “Birdman” took home the top prize at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s comedy about a washed up actor (played by Michael Keaton) now sits as the leader in the clubhouse for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, inching ahead of critics’ favorite “Boyhood” thanks to strong industry support.
Eddie Redmayne won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Lead Role for “The Theory of Everything,” giving him a slight edge in the Oscars race over Keaton, a fellow nominee in the category. Oscar favorites Julianne Moore (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Lead Role for “Still Alice”), J.K. Simmons (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for “Whiplash”) and Patricia Arquette (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for “Boyhood”) all kept their momentum going at the SAG Awards by taking home trophies. It’s expected all three actors will win in their corresponding Oscars’ categories at the Academy Awards next month.
On the television side, “Downton Abbey” grabbed the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Viola Davis was awarded Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for “How to Get Away With Murder,” while Kevin Spacey won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for “House of Cards.” Elsewhere, the cast of “Orange is the New Black” won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, “Orange is the New Black” star Uzo Aduba was named Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series and “Shameless” lead William H. Macy earned Outstanding Male Actor in a Comedy Series. Mark Ruffalo (“The Normal Heart”) and Frances McDormand (“Olive Kitteridge”) won lead acting awards for television movie or miniseries.
During the red carpet, the stunt ensembles for “Unbroken” and “Game of Thrones” were honored by the SAG Awards.
