2012 Billboard Music Awards Live on Channel O
Channel O has announced that it has secured the rights to broadcast the 2012 Billboard Music Awards live. The first-ever live African screening of this annual industry event will take place on Monday, 21 May at 1am WAT.
It has also been announced that Chris Brown has been added to the list of superstars set to perform at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. With a Grammy and a #1 album already under his belt, Brown will be performing less than two months before his fifth studio album, Fortune, drops on Tuesday, 3 July. His previous release, 2011’s F.A.M.E. débuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, with 872 000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan.
His latest single, ‘Turn Up the Music’, débuted at #10 on the Hot 100 and he’s currently at #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with his Rihanna collaboration, ‘Birthday Cake’. The R&B star is also a finalist in four Billboard Music Awards categories, including Top Male Artist.
Hosted by Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell, who play the uptight mom and goofball dad on the hit comedy Modern Family, there will be plenty of star power to wrangle during the broadcast, with Usher, Justin Bieber, CeeLo Green, LMFAO, Nelly Furtado, Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, Carrie Underwood, LMFAO and The Wanted already announced as performers.
Adele, LMFAO, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne lead the finalists for the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. Adele takes the lead as a finalist in 18 award categories, while LMFAO is a finalist in 17 categories. Rihanna lands in 13 categories this year, after leading the pack with 18 category appearances in 2011. Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne each snagged a spot in 10 categories.
The awards will reflect Billboard‘s chart rankings based on key fan interactions with music, including album sales and downloads, track downloads, radio airplay and touring as well as streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Vevo, Youtube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Entertainment and Next Big Sound. The awards will be based on the reporting period 1 March 2011 through to 29 February 2012. Top artists will be recognised in a variety of genres, including R&B, rap, pop, country, rock, Latin and alternative.
The awards show will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Catch the 2012 Billboard Music Awards on Monday, 21 May at 1am WAT, only on Channel O (DStv channel 320).
