ESPN presents LIVE coverage of the US Open beginning August 27
In August, ESPN’s coverage of world-class tennis features the season’s final Grand Slam, the US Open, airing LIVE from Flushing, New York. The current US Open is a far cry from the tournament that began 130 years ago. What was in 1881 an exclusive men’s singles and doubles tournament has evolved into a two-week sports extravaganza featuring all the top-ranked tennis pros in the world, both men and women.
Last year saw Serbia’s Novak Djokovic defeat Rafael Nadal for his sixth victory over the tough Spaniard in 2011. It was the first US Open final since 1995 to feature the Top 2 players in the world. Djokovic and Nadal are again battling it out atop the rankings, joined by Swiss star Roger Federer and Great Britain’s Andy Murray. The women’s final saw Australia’s Samantha Stosur take her first major title with an upset victory over U.S. talent Serena Williams. Both remain highly ranked, joined by Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, Russia’s Maria Sharapova, Czech pro Petra Kvitova and China’s Na Li.
