StarTimes subscriber base in Nigeria hit 900,000

StarTimes has increased it subscriber base to 900,000 from 750,000 as at July, 2012. The company had said in July that it had over 750,000 subscribers across eight cities in the country, while announcing plans to extend its digital broadcasting coverage to about 26 cities before the end of the year.

The Chief Executive Officer, NTA-StarTimes TV Network, Mr. Joshua Wang, who spoke during the second anniversary price presentation in Lagos on Friday, said the company had extended its coverage area from eight to 10 cities and now had 900,000 subscribers.

“We have built a subscriber base of over 900,000 in two years of operations. Aba and Enugu can now receive signal,” he said.

Wang further said the company had also improved on its content in line with the commitment it made to its subscribers through the UEFA free-to-air broadcasting rights granted to NTA, adding that StarTimes subscribers could now watch UEFA matches via their decoders or on the newly introduced mobile device.

He said StarTimes would increase its channels to 80 by the end of the month.

The Nigerian Television Authority, having acquired the free-to-air right for the 2012/13 season, according to him, will be thrilling its viewers and football lovers with live matches from the UEFA Champions League and the Europa Cup.

According to Wang, the public can view the matches on NTA network stations, partner TV stations and the NTA Sports 24; the latter is a 24-hour sports dedicated station and is currently exclusive on StarTimes.

Wang said live matches would be broadcast every Wednesdays and Thursday on NTA Sports 24.

“It is also important to mention that the over 900,000 StarTimes subscribers can view these matches live on NTA Sports 24, either through the StarTimes decoder or the newly introduced StarTimes Mobile TV or GPS Car TV with or without payment of their monthly subscription fees,” he said.
