‘Heroes’ to be revived as miniseries; coming in 2015 with creator Tim Kring on board

NBC is bringing back Heroes.

A 13-episode event miniseries,Heroes Reborn, is coming in 2015 with creator Tim Kringon board. Kring also has a high-profile miniseries, Dig starringJason Isaacs, in the works at USA Network as well.

NBC teased the miniseries with a brief spot during its Olympics coverage Saturday, and plans to unroll a digital tie-in ahead of its premiere. The plot forHeroes Reborn is being kept under wraps.

The decision to revive Heroes comes as sci-fi fare continues to be a hot genre on both broadcast and cable. This pilot season, NBC is prepping a DC Comics take with Constantine, and ABC has found success with Marvel adaptation Agents of SHIELDHeroes Reborn gives NBC instant brand recognition, giving the network a leg up with marketing costs and fanboys.

The original series, which ran from 2006-2010, helped launch the careers of stars Zachary Quinto, Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere, among others.

This marks NBC’s second series order for 2015. The network on Friday picked up a 13-episode drama starring Jennifer Lopez and produced by her American Idol cohort Ryan Seacrest.

“The enormous impact Heroes had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening,” said NBC Entertainment  president Jennifer Salke. “Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often and we thought it was time for another installment. We’re thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept. Until we get closer to air in 2015, the show will be appropriately shrouded in secrecy, but we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original castmembers popping back in.”

This follows Fox’s trajectory with the 24: Live Another Day miniseries, which is bringing back the Kiefer Sutherland series later this year.
