Everything is better in HD on Discovery

Discovery Channel HD

If you’re a fan of Discovery Channel (121) and the adventurous and awesome shows it has on offer, you’re in for a huge viewing upgrade because as from 30 June, Discovery Channel will be simulcast in HD to all DStv Premium subscribers.

What does this mean for you? Well, all the gripping shows you enjoy watching will be in HD and everyone knows that everything is better in HD. With astounding picture clarity, you may have to hold on to your hats because your Discovery Channel viewing will never be the same again.

Here are a few shows which we think will be totally awesome in HD:

In Klondike (Mondays at 21:00), which is Discovery’s first scripted mini-series, the story is shaped around opportunistic entrepreneurs who flock to Yukon in the late 1890s in search of gold and riches. See the negative impact this has on the locals, their lands and their livelihoods as well as the harsh realities and temptations these opportunists are met with.

Car Chasers (Fridays at 21:55) follows Jeff and Perry as they chase after classic cars to buy and resell. They aim to buy the cars at the lowest possible price and sell at a much higher price. Tune in to find out if they actually pull it off and manage to make a profit.

Idris Elba: King of Speed (Fridays at 20:05) sees the Hollywood actor trace the history of car racing and the influence it’s had on car designs of the 21st century.

There’s nothing more rewarding than hauling in an abundant catch for the crews and captains ofDeadliest Catch (Mondays at 19:35). However, this is easier said and done and they put their lives on the line in the rough Bering Sea to haul in the biggest King Crab to fill their ship’s storage.

Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls (Tuesday, 1 July at 21:00) sees the survival expert venture into the wild unknown as he challenges two teams to endure the worst of the worst conditions and get out alive.

To make your viewing experience that much richer, check out these brand new shows on Discovery Channel premiering in July.

Actor James Woods leads us on a journey of fantastical discovery in Futurescape with James Woods (starting 2 July at 21:00) as each episode tackles one idea of discovery that is guaranteed to change the life we know. The show ignites curiosity and opens vast possibilities for the future.

If fishing is your forte then tune in to River Monsters (8 July at 20:05) as biologist Jeremy Wade takes fishing to new heights by aiming to capture ferocious freshwater fish. He sets out into remote jungles and explores the murky depths to uncover the perfect catch. Tune in to find out if he will succeed in this new season.

Everybody has a hoarder in them somewhere. Storage Wars Canada (14 July at 19:10) reveals the things people could not bear to part with, but eventually did, as four teams of bidders try to outbid their competitors for the loot of a lifetime. But there’s a big risk involved – they’ll either strike it lucky or they could be stuck with heaps of worthless junk. It’s a race for trash or treasure.

Prepare to be amazed with Close-Up Kings (30 July at 21:00) as three sleight-of-hand artists set out to complete several challenges in each of the episodes that will wow you. From performing a show in front of thousands of fans at the baseball stadium, undertaking a surprise act of charity, or carrying out carefully-choreographed revenge for a wronged citizen, they’ll have to somehow pull it all off.
