New TV show & film added to Amazon Prime this December
This month, Prime boasts a handful of new originals and some noteworthy theatrical releases you might’ve missed. Make yourself at home.
Highlights
Point Break (available 12/1)
Point Break is sublime. With its beautiful ocean photography, pulse-pounding robbery sequences, and delicate male-friendship between Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, the undercover-cop drama rides tone like a veteran surfer ripping up uneven waves. Yes, some parts — like anything with Gary Busey — are ridiculous, but director Kathryn Bigelow brings a wryness to the material that keeps the movie from descending into bro’d-out camp. It’s no surprise that the Fast and Furious series lifted the film’s most essential quality to kickstart a billion-dollar franchise — everyone wants to spend time with a close-knit family.
Crown Heights (available 12/8)
Lakeith Stanfield stars in this adaptation of a This American Life story, in which the best friend of a man wrongfully accused of murder dedicates himself to proving his friend’s innocence. It’s a gut-wrenching story that’s all the more relevant in light of heightened contemporary criticism of America’s runaway prison system.
It Comes at Night (available 12/9)
In this a post-apocalyptic nightmare-and-a-half, the horrors of humanity, the strain of chaotic emotions pent up in the name of survival, bleed out through wary eyes and weathered hands. The setup is blockbuster-sized — reverts mankind to the days of the American Frontier, every sole survivor fights to protect their families and themselves — but the drama is mano-a-mano. Barricaded in a haunted-house-worthy cabin in the woods, Paul (Joel Edgerton) takes in Will (Christopher Abbott) and his family, knowing full well they could threaten his family’s existence. All the while, Paul’s son, Trevor, battles bloody visions of (or induced by?) the contagion.
The Last Post: Season 1 (available 12/22)
British soldiers live the dream life in Aden, Yemen during the final days of colonialism, and the Yemenis are not too happy with their occupiers. The situation gets hot, fast, and personal relationships entangle with geopolitical shifts in surprising, tragic ways.
