Gulder Ultimate Search Season 9: Episode 4 (2 Golden Rules – Lose Not Thy Keys…And Fail Not The Gatekeeper’s Test)

The contestants’ very short sleep was interrupted by Anchor man, Chidi Mokeme’s surprise visit to their camp in the wee hours of the morning. Our daring dozen were the first set of Gulder Ultimate Search contestants to locate their camp in the dead of the night. The construction of their camp stretched to the wee hours of the morning. They barely slept.

Mokeme’s morning mission was three-fold: to ask if any contestant wanted to opt out voluntarily; to hand over 12 Golden Keys to each of them and to warn of the consequences of failing the Gatekeeper’s test.

No contestant indicated interest in leaving voluntarily. Mokeme shed more light on the importance of the keys. He warned: “The keys represent your participation in the jungle. You are individually responsible for the safety of your keys. So you must keep them safe, you must keep them protected. If you lose your key, you can’t lock or unlock. That means we may have to ferry you all the way home. These are the Gatekeeper’s keys. They are the keys that will unlock the gates that will lead you to the treasure. Keep them safe. Do not lose them!”

He further informed them that the presence of a Gatekeeper at any of the tasks meant the impending eviction of the contestants. “If you fail your challenge, you will hand over your keys to the Gatekeeper, and that will be the end of your quest.”  The three Gatekeepers for Gulder Ultimate Search 9 are Dominic Mudabai, Michael Nwachukwu and Christopher Okagbue – winners of Gulder Ultimate Search Seasons 4, 5 and 8 respectively.

Their very first task entailed a pair of contestants holding a wooden weight and walking across balance beams, climbing over a fence and crawling under a bamboo bed. They had to undergo this exercise twice. The two contestants were not to let go of the ropes tied to the wooden weight. They were also not to fall off the balance beam.

Teams 3 & 4, comprising Ifet Iniobong & Ezeh Priscilla and Kofya Brown & Ojezele Paschal respectively, had to repeat a lap of the exercise as they let go of the ropes during the course of the game.

Ujam Chukwunonso and Bornford Patience, who made up Team 1, emerged the winning pair of the task. The team’s reward comprised a sumptuous meal of Sharwarma and orange juice. Considering that the contestants had ingeniously carved out cutlery (spoons, plates and cups) out of bamboos – since no provision has been made for cutlery – and they were limited to garri and water for meals, having Sharwarma was indeed a great relief for them. Patience and Ujam shared the meal with the rest of the salivating dozen.

For emerging the losing pair, Kofya and Paschal were ordered to repair the muddy pathway which led to the stream where the contestants sourced for water.
