Facebook privacy policy now open to public vote

Recently, Facebook posted proposed revisions to its Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) and Data Use Policy and invited users to provide comments on these new documents. Now, please vote to let Facebook know which documents you prefer to govern the site.

To be notified about future proposed changes to the documents governing Facebook, please like the Facebook Site Governance Page here: https://www.facebook.com/fbsitegovernance

Q: How will the vote work?
A: Voting will begin on December 3 at 11pm (WAT) and end on December 10 at 11pm (WAT). Users may vote between adopting (1) the revised versions of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and Data Use Policy or (2) keeping the existing versions of these documents.

You may only vote once and can’t change your vote once you’ve voted. As stated in both Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and Data Use Policy, if more than 30% of all active users vote, the results will be binding. If turnout is less than 30%, the vote will be advisory.

Q: Who is an eligible voter?
A: You are eligible to vote on these documents if you joined Facebook as of December 3, 2012, the day we announced and started the vote.

Q: What kind of information will the voting app collect when I vote and what will happen to that data?
A: As described in its Data Use Policy, Facebook sometimes shares information with service providers, like Thuzi, the developer of this voting app. When you use this app, Thuzi may access and use some information, like your user ID.  This allows Thuzi to determine whether you are eligible to vote and to record your vote once it has been cast.  Thuzi may not use any of this information for any other purpose and will delete the information after it has completed its services. Q: When will the results be announced?
A: Voting ends on December 10, 2012 at 11pm (WAT), and final results will be announced by the following day.

Q: What happens after the results are complete?
A: Once voting has ended, an outside auditor will review the final results. Facebook will post the results on its Site Governance Page. As stated in both Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and Data Use Policy, if more than 30% of all active users vote, the results will be binding. If turnout is less than 30%, the vote will be advisory.

Q: Will I be able to share that I voted with my friends?
A: Yes. When you vote, you will be presented with the option to share the fact that you voted, with the audience of your choice, through a story on your news feed.
