Skype adds video messaging feature
Skype, the online service known for its video and audio calling functionality, is adding new features. Available from now, the main new feature is that of video messages – think of it as voicemail with added video. Skype supports videomails (sounds cooler than video message) of up to three minutes in length, which the recipient can view when they next come online.
Of course, the feature is not just for offline friends for when they come back: users will be able to record video messages and send them to friends at any time, online or not.
Oddly, despite Microsoft buying Skype in 2011, the feature is yet to arrive on either the Windows or Linux versions of the software. A spokesperson for Skype told The Verge that they are “pleased there’s interest for Video Messaging to come to Skype for Windows” and will “let you know,” when it does eventually arrive.
Users of Skype for Windows (both desktop and mobile) will however be able to receive video messages, just not send them. A link will appear in Skype Instant Messenger that they can follow and watch the videomail. No word has been given for whether Linux users will have the same pleasure.
Skype’s new video message feature is available from now on Skype for Mac OS X, Android and iOS. As always, we’ll be keeping you updated with all the latest on Skype. Take a look at a trailer for Skype for Windows Phone below.
