All eyes will be on Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, as the African Youth Championships begins in Algeria and live on SuperSport

It’s time for the continent’s youth to showcase their skills on your World of Champions, as the African Youth Championships for under-20s begins in Algeria on Saturday.

Catch the opening game between Algeria and Benin Saturday 16 March  on SS9 from 5:25pm WAT. 

However, all eyes will be on Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, who will defend the title won in South Africa in 2011.

Impressive results from friendly matches in North Africa indicate Nigeria can dominate again. Indeed, the Flying Eagles have the best record in Africa with six titles.

Coached by John Obuh, the team parades youngsters like Alhaji Gero, Abduljelili Ajagun, Moses Orkuma and Olarenwaju Kayode, among others.

On Sunday 17 March, Nigeria’s exploits against Mali will be live on SS9 from 5:25pm WAT.

Due to their poor showing at the AYC in 2011, Ghana subsequently appointed Silas Tetteh to drill a new squad.

Expect a bunch of skilful youngsters coached by the experienced Tetteh, who led Ghana to win the 2009 edition in Rwanda and also beat Brazil 2-0 to become the first African team to win the Fifa U20 World Cup, in Egypt.

Tetteh’s return has sparked hopes for the team which has only three players from Europe.

Other teams include Egypt, Mali, Benin, Congo DR and Gabon.

Ghana will play Egypt in another Group A match Saturday 16 March at 8:25pm WAT on SS9.

Semi-finalists at the AYC will represent Africa at the Fifa under-20 World Cup in Turkey.
