Club football’s crowning glory – on SuperSport
Already the kings of club football on their respective continents, Bayern Munich from Europe, Africa’s Al Ahly, South America’s Atletico Mineiro, North America’s CF Monterrey, Guangzhou Evergrande from Asia and Australia’s Auckland City, along with host country Morocco’s Raja Casablanca, now seek world domination in the annual Fifa Club World Cup.
The tournament will be broadcast exclusively live on SuperSport from 11 to 21 December.
The Club World Cup, now in its ninth edition, is contested by the previous season winners of theUefa Champions League (Bayern), CAF Champions League (Al Ahly), AFC Champions League (Guanzhou), CONCACAF Champions League (Monterrey), Copa Libertadores(Mineiro), OFC Champions League (Auckland), as well as the host country’s league champions (Raja).
This year’s tournament will see Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, vying for a hat-trick of titles, having won the 2009 and 2011 editions with FC Barcelona, while another former Barcelona employee, Ronaldinho, who now plays for Mineiro, will be desperate to get his hands on the trophy which narrowly eluded him back in 2006. It’s one of the few major trophies still missing from his stellar collection of trophies he could possibly win with both club and country.
Also looking to improve are the recently crowned African champions, Al Ahly. The Egyptians’, who will be making a record sixth appearance, best showing is a third-place finish achieved in 2006.
