Other than competing for the continental crown, South Africa, Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia, Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Ghana will battle it out for automatic World Cup qualification at the 2014 edition of the Caf African Women’s Championship (AWC) in Namibia.

The tournament that runs from 11 October to 25 October is live on SuperSport.

Fifa’s decision to expand the women’s edition of their quadrennial football extravaganza from 16 to 24 teams resulted in Caf being awarded an extra slot (three; up from two).

This means podium finishers in Namibia will be guaranteed a ticket to Canada, the hosts of the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup.

In 10 editions of the AFC, since its inception in 1991, only two teams have been crowned queens of Africa: Nigeria (a record eight times) and twice by defending champions Equatorial Guinea, who’ll be conspicuous by their absence. Nzalang Nacional fell at the final qualification hurdle, losing on the away goals rule to Ivory Coast after a 3-3 aggregate draw.
