Oscar Pistorius sentencing begins Monday
The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius will come to a close next week when Judge Thokozile Masipa delivers her sentence at the High Court in Pretoria.
Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide last month after he shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day 2013.
While the athlete was accused of murder, Masipa found the state failed to prove any intention to kill Steenkamp and ruled instead that Pistorius had been extremely negligent.
From Monday, legal teams for the state and the defence will argue in aggravation and mitigation of sentencing, attempting to persuade Masipa towards either a more stringent or more lenient decision.
A conviction on culpable homicide can carry a prison sentence of up to 15 years, but Barry Roux will be trying his best to secure a suspended sentence for his client.
