The 2015 AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards are almost upon us. In the coming weeks, we will be profiling each award category. Today, Isabella Akinseye takes a look at Best Movie (Drama).
Devil in the Detail
Written and directed by the award winning Shirley Frimpong-Manso, Devil in the Detailfeatures a cast comprising some of the best acts from Nollywood and Ghollywood. Playing the lead role is Nse Ikpe-Etim who was voted the Best Actress (Drama) in the 2014 AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards. Frimpong-Manso’s The Contract shone at last year’s awards, would this year be a repeat?
Invasion 1897
Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen’s highly anticipated epic Invasion 1897 was shot in Nigeria and the United Kingdom with a 1 000-man cast. The film is based on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897 and the looting of ancient artifacts. Invasion 1897 is bright, bold and colourful which blends fact and fiction.
Secret Room
It is not every day you see an African horror movie done well. Secret Room stars the maiden AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards Best Actor in a Drama O.C. Ukeje alongside Tinsel’sLinda Ejiofor. A couple goes back to an old abandoned house to reveal a secret locked away by the lady’s father in a faraway land. One word – scary.
A Place in the Stars
Steve Gukas’ A Place in the Stars is part tribute to the late Prof Dora Akunyili and part drug counterfeit awareness campaign. Featuring Tinsel’s duo of Gideon Okeke and Matilda Obaseki, the movie also explores family drama and relationship issues. Shot in northern Nigeria, the scenery is a breath of fresh air from the usual Nollywood fare.
October 1
Kunle Afolayan’s award-winning movie October 1 is a drama but manages to pack elements of suspense, comedy, action, romance and thriller. Set in pre-independence Nigeria, the multifaceted story explores issues such as murder, ethnicity, paedophilia, religion and patriotism among others. Afolayan stars alongside notable acts from Nollywood, Yoriwood and Hollywood.
Make a Move
Ivie Okujaye won the Trailblazer Award at the first AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the next year she was nominated for the Best Actress in a Drama. This year, Make a Move, her debut as a producer, is standing shoulders with works from more established acts. Okujaye plays the lead in the movie that combines music, drama and dance with cameos from Tuface Idibia, Omawumi and Denrele Edun.
