There is something about a great comedy; you don’t remain the same after watching it. Whether it is a soppy rom-com or straight up slapstick comedy, they’re all good fun and should put you in a cheery mood. If the audience doesn’t laugh, it is not a comedy.

Here are the top movies that got us laughing our socks off in 2014.

Mildred Okwo and Rita Dominic – The Meeting

What is supposed to be a quick meeting with the minister in Abuja turns out to be an experience of a lifetime for Makinde Esho. Rita Dominic as Clara Ikemba was a sight to behold from her dressing to her command of the English language; she was the obstacle everyone needed to cross to see the minister. Other characters like Mrs Kachukwu, Bolarinwa, Mr Ugo and Mrs Ikomi all played by notable acts added to the comedic mix. The romance between Esho and his young-enough-to-be-his-daughter-love Ejura was the icing on the cake.

Lydia Forson – A Letter From Adam

Lydia has been dazzling us with her acting prowess and screenwriting genius for a while now, but she hit virgin territory when she decided to produce. Her first fruit, A Letter From Adam is a fun rom-com set in Accra dealing with love and relationships. As heroine of the movie, she is in hot pursuit of Cupid and her journey almost comes to an end when she meets her Adam. She is funny, dramatic and very ‘in your face’ with her larger than life character.

Ayo Makun – 30 Days in Atlanta

Ayo Makun, or AY as he is popularly called, is first a comedian before being an actor. He wears his Akpors character like a second skin in the star studded top charting blockbuster, 30 Days in Atlanta. Shot in Lagos and Atlanta, the movie is a melting pot for Hollywood and Nollywood stars. Akpors steals the show with his witty lines and funny gestures as he enjoys an eye-popping-mouth-dropping 30 day holiday in Atlanta.

Ehizojie Ojesebholo – Jand Hustle

Is the grass really greener on the other side? A curious Jimi Bendel wants to know and leaves his home in West Africa for greener pastures in East London. Shot in Lagos and London, this documentary-comedy is an expose on what life can be in the Diaspora. In his hope to find love and fortune, Bendel learns the hard way that to survive in Jand (London), you have to hustle. In this case, the taste of the pudding is definitely in the eating.

Zynell Zuh – When Love Comes Around

There can be no honey without money. There is no romance without finance. These are mottos that love lives by. After suffering heartbreak, she changes her dating rules; she’s in it for the money. And her dream man must have loads of it and some class. Just when she thinks she has hit jackpot, true love comes lurking around. Will she follow her heart or her head? Featuring a cast from Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria, this rom-com puts a spin on the love debate.
