VIDEO: Trevor Noah sees parallels between President Jacob Zuma and President-Elect Donald Trump
With Donald Trump’s US Presidential campaign fairly light on policy matters, the American media does not appear to know what to expect from him, Trevor Noah said on The Daily Show.
However, Noah said he sees parallels between Trump and president Jacob Zuma, and suggested that looking to South Africa will give insight into what could happen in the US.
“Remember when I first started The Daily Show, I said Donald Trump reminded me of an African dictator.”
Noah was referring to a 2015 episode where he compared statements by Trump to those of Idi Amin and Robert Mugabe.
Trump and Zuma
“Up until a few years ago, our economy was humming, tourism was thriving. Basically, times were good.”
Then Zuma arrived and the economy stalled, unemployment reached record highs, and corruption became rampant.
This is what the US might face under a Trump presidency, said Noah.
“The inept self-serving way Zuma has run his administration has turned South Africa from a rising power to a very troubled state.”
“And the reason I’m telling you this, is because when you look at Zuma and Trump, it seems like they are brothers from another mother.”
Noah said:
- Zuma was to face 700 corruption and fraud charges, Donald Trump has over 400 pending lawsuits against him.
- Zuma and Trump built a reputation as men of the people.
- Many Zuma and Trump supporters may be found in rural areas.
- Zuma was charged and acquitted of rape, Trump has a rape status conference with a judge coming up.
- Zuma and Trump have both been called “teflon politicians”.
“These similarities are amusing on the surface, but what’s more important is understanding what a leader like this could mean for America,” said Noah.
Another parallel was Donald Trump’s promise to put Hillary Clinton in jail if he comes to power.
“Trump using prosecution to intimidate his opponents, it might seem like a novel thing here in the US, but just like soccer you might want to get used to it.”
“You see, it’s called state capture.”
