The Royal Hibiscus Hotel is a charming rom-com that tells the story of ‘Ope’, played by Zainab Balogun, a struggling Nigerian chef in London who moves back to Lagos and discovers that life is quite unpredictable. A chance encounter at her parents’ rundown hotel brings new hope, followed by disappointment, and she flees back to the UK. The movie’s universal themes of love, laughter, dreams and family, make it easy for people of all ages and cultures to connect with it.
The Royal Hibiscus Hotel made its international debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2017. It was the only Nigerian movie and one of just three African features selected for the Contemporary World Cinema category, which spotlights forty-eight of the best new films worldwide.
