VIDEO: Tiwa Savage, Olamide, Diamond and Cassper Nyovest win big at #CHOAMVA14 + Full winners list

The much-anticipated 2014 Channel O Music Video Awards has ended in Johannesburg, South Africa with some few surprises and a lot of fun and excitement. The ceremony which witnessed exciting performances from some of Africa’s biggest music stars including AKA, Davido, Patoranking and Tiwa Savage and many others saw Tanzania’s superstar Diamond winning four awards on the night including Most Gifted East Africa, Most Gifted Newcomer, Most Gifted Afropop. Also winning three nods was South Africa’s Cassper Nyovest for his hit ‘Doc Shebeleza’. He picked up the biggest award of the night, Most Gifted Music Video of the year, as well as Most Gifted Male and Most Gifted Southern Africa.

Surprisingly, Davido couldn’t pick up any award as many people expected. He lost on the Most Gifted West Africa award to Olamide. Iconic South African group, Boom Shaka received the Special Recognition Award for the year. Boom Shaka was a pioneering kwaito music group from South Africa, consisting of Junior Sokhela, the late Lebo Mathosa, Theo Nhlengethwa and Thembi Seete. Boom Shaka’s first single “It’s About Time” was released in 1993 which saw the group becoming one of the most successful bands of the mid-1990s in South Africa and their music became the soundtrack for many young people in the newly democratic South Africa.

Boom Shaka was able to break into the international market and achieved success outside of South Africa in London among other places. Thembi Seete gave an emotional acceptance speech paying tribute to late group member, Lebo Mathosa. She was almost teary when she empathically stated that it was their first ever award in their music career.
